THE CHILD & ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRIC & PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPY CONSULTANTS

Home: Welcome

Welcome to the psychiatric & psychological therapy consultants where we pride ourselves on helping young people from 0-25 to lead improved and fulfilled lives. We are a group of practitioners who specialise in child and adolescent mental health, and who have over 20 years' experience of working in child NHS mental health services. Some of our practitioners hold multiple professional registrations which provides an enhanced and specialist multi-disciplinary team.

Each practitioner provides expert assessment, formulation, interventions and treatment and has worked in a wide variety of clinical settings; both psychiatric inpatient and in the community. We only employ practitioners with extensive knowledge and experience, who have worked in the NHS, who all receive supervision, have ongoing personal development and stay updated with clinical services and research.

We can work with and diagnose a wide range of mental health challenges, difficulties and disorders in line with the international classification of diseases. We understand the pressures of the NHS and waiting lists and this is how the practice developed so practitioners can deliver child appropriate and flexible services, which are child and family led and delivered at the right time, where you are involved at every step. We have all undertaken safeguarding training to level 3, other mandatory training, areas of interest training, and are all registered with governing bodies that regulate our practice. Each practitioner has had an enhanced disclosure barring service (DBS) check completed in the last 3 years and will have ongoing checks as standard. Each practitioner has indemnity insurance and is registered with the information commissioner's office (ICO) so your data is stored in line with GDPR.

We accept referrals from professionals and self referrals. We always like to speak to people about potential referrals so we can start meaningful dialogues from the beginning and encourage contact throughout your care and treatment with the service.

We work on an inclusive way of working and will include parents/carers in your care and treatment unless you inform us otherwise.

We do not work with young people in inpatient psychiatric services nor would we be the appropriate service to provide interventions at the point of discharge. We are not a crisis service and are unable to respond to emergency situations but are available to provide guidance and appropriate action should it be required. We would always advise to attend A&E and to contact emergency services if the situation is urgent. We do not provide legal work as we want to maintain our focus on delivering clinical care and treatment. We can work with insurance companies and please discuss this when you make your initial enquiry so it can be explored.

AUTISM ASSESSMENTS

Autism is a highly challenging condition that impacts on every person differently. We provide face-to-face assessments, and are equipped to identify autism so children can go on to lead fulfilling lives.  Every young person will perceive the world and themselves differently to other people, and the impact this has can be variable from person to person.

ADHD ASSESSMENTS

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a collection of symptoms that are usually present from an early age. Most children are diagnosed prior to adolescence which can affect both girls and boys.

The main domains of ADHD are in attentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Symptoms need to impact a child in various settings of their lives and impact on their global functioning. ADHD can have a significant impact on a child’s life and ability to manage and often be associated with challenging behaviour, where children can be at risk of stigmatisation/labelled as a naughty child instead of being understood, biologically, psychologically and emotionally.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) was developed for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is suitable to treat children and reduce symptoms along with other modalities. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommend EMDR, for the treatment of PTSD in children.

EMDR can be particularly helpful for people who do not want to talk about traumatic events in detail. In EMDR there are phases of stabilisation, which carefully enables a person to undertake the full intervention and treatment.

SUPERVISION

Supervision is an essential aspect of continuing to practice as a health professional and a wide variety of other setting where people are working with children & young people. It promotes a reflective space where ideas, formulations, responses, processes and gathering an understanding of a clinical situation can be thought about and understood, so people can receive the most appropriate intervention and treatment.

We offer specialist supervision for people working with children in a wide variety of settings. This can be delivered both individually and in groups.

CONSULTATION

Consultations refer to practitioners using their expert specialist knowledge and experience to provide and support other professionals working with children. Through the means of consultation we understand a child through the lens of other professionals and assist thinking and developing an opinion, problem solving and planning future interventions.

Consultations can be delivered with a particular focus, young person specific, a situation (current or historic) thematic topic and system wide thinking.

All consultations encourage an interactive dynamic discussion which enhances curiosity, understanding, development and reflection. We will provide a written report following a consultation.
